There are two N-Frame S&W revolvers for sale near me. One is a 6" pre-Model 28 5 screw Highway Patrolman, and the other is a blue 6" Model 57 (no dash). The HP looks like it was holster carried a lot. However, it seems tight with almost no end shake. The Model 57 is in pretty decent shape, but has the wrong stocks on it (speedloader cutout instead of football cutout).

The HP is $695 and the 57 is $995.

As I'm a shooter rather than a collector, I'd go with the HP, assuming it's good to go
They are both shooter grade, so either will fit the bill. I have several of each caliber and enjoy shooting them all. The HP would definitely be cheaper to feed, even handloading. My favorite though is .45 Colt. Easier to see the holes in the target from a distance.

Both sound like good buys. I would also go for the HP as it probably spent most of its time in the holster.

Agree with the people above me as well. I'd grab the HP without hesitation. At $695 for a tight, mechanically sound pre-model 5-screw, that's a good deal even with the holster wear. Those old duty guns have real character, and the fact that it's still tight tells you it was well-made and properly maintained.

The Model 57 is a real gem, especially since it's a no-dash version in .41 Magnum. Sure, it’s got the wrong grips, but it’s still in pretty good shape and the price tag of $995 feels just right. Just keep in mind that .41 Magnum isn’t as easy to find or feed as .357. If you’re not already set up to handle it, that could definitely be something to think about.

I have half a dozen .41's and have been loading my own ammo for decades. Great cartridge. Sometimes I carry a 3" Model 657 (no dash) as my CCW.
