Where do you train?

I live on a very small ranch in the rural area on the edge of the Payette Forest. The closest range is over an hours drive away. While I do go there occasionally, a 20 minute ride on my ATV brings me to an area that has a flat area with a steep bank and is perfect for practice. I have a breakdown target hanger and remove my brass at the end of the training. I also have a model 1911 BB pistol that I use for draw and fire drills around the ranch.

I absolutely love setups like yours because they remind me that effective training doesn’t always need to happen at a formal range. If I had a spot like that, just a quick ride to a natural backstop with no one around I’d probably spend half my week out there. There’s something about being able to run drills at your own pace without lane rules or people waiting behind you, that makes the practice feel so much more organic. Most of my training is a mix of range trips and whatever I can squeeze in at home. I do a lot of dry-fire and movement work to keep my skills sharp between live-fire sessions but it definitely doesn’t compare to having your own little slice of land to really stretch things out.

I've got 12 acres up against the National Forest on two sides of my property. I can set targets out to 700 yards.
