The difference between practicing for competition and practicing for self defense

Competition builds speed and accuracy on a stage & training for self defense focuses more on recognizing threats, making decisions under pressure and handling real situations. I do believe that both have value, but neither one covers everything on its own. If you only do one, you are leaving gaps in your ability.

Additionally, both disciplines require different gear (depending on competition); firearms, holsters, magazines, ammunition, etc.

Neither of those things really gets you ready for the legal mess or the social dynamics that come with a real confrontation. You’ve really got to layer your training ...get your speed from matches, your decision-making from scenario training and your legal knowledge from classes that focus on just that.

I would recommend taking a class every year or so to remind your self and also your spouse (if they also carry) on the legal changes in your state. It should include how to act and what to say if stopped by a police officer.
