I decided to test myself with a simple rule. I would spend three days in the woods using only what I had in my get home bag. It was not a survival situation, just a controlled way to see what worked and what did not. I was able to handle shelter, fire, and water but I quickly realized a few gaps in my setup. Some items I thought were essential never got used, while others became more important than I expected. It was a good reminder that you do not really understand your gear until you rely on it

What items worked and what were extra?
Could "circumstances' have changed (i.e. weather) and made those 'extra" items more useful?

How heavy is the bag? I take a hike each summer out into the Wilderness Area and every year find things that Need to be added or deleted. It is a good test also to my foraging skills and ability to find renewable protein.

Spending 48 hours just living out of your get-home bag? That's the reality check most people really need. What you imagine is essential and what you actually end up using, those are almost never the same two lists.
