Do modern short-barrel designs continue to rely on excessive gas to maintain their reliability?

Yeah, many short-barreled rifles are still heavily gassed to make sure they cycle correctly. The companies prioritize reliability over comfort. but if you tune them right, they can feel much better than the stock setup..

Most of the shorter setups I’ve handled still come over-gassed straight out of the box. They run alright but it’s not the most comfortable. Once you tune them a bit, the whole thing feels way smoother.

I wouldn't say that my POF 308 pistol (13.75") is "comfortable". But she's a blast, literally and figuratively, to play with.
