Looking for advice on a new rifle!

You have made some very valid points. I live in the Payette National Forest and often run across deer and elk while shrooming or berry picking. Last year I was even braced by a pack of wolves. The more I read about the 44 mag, the less I like it. I think that it is more likely that I will go with either a 30-06 or .308.

No argument against bear spray as first line of defense. After running a number of timed drills on my two 10mm and a long discussion with Tim from BB I went back to my .45. Assuming a bear attack will not be a frontal and that response time is around a few seconds, I wanted to see how many rounds I could get into a 4" circle from a holstered condition in 3 seconds. The answer was one vs three and the holes were bigger on the .45. Also assuming that due to surprise that there was a probability that I might miss about 50% of the time (and yes I am a combat vet and have been in firefights so have a little experience under pressure) I would rather have the opportunity to hit or miss three times versus once.
Interesting that Tim would steer you away from BB 10mm as a preferred load to the 45. Would not have expected that. 45 is fine for black bear, no good for G Bear. Glock 20 holds 16 rounds of 10mm so you can hit or miss 10 times - pretty serious medicine and as far as group size goes, more practice would probably help that with the 10. Mine holds pretty tight.

You know what you know, hope that helps

My favorite woods gun is a Remington 673 Guide Rifle in .350 Remington Magnum. I load it with 250 grain Nosler Partitions at roughly 2,500 fps. It knocks elk over as if a rug was pulled out from under them. Mine wears a Leupold VX®-3i 1.5-5x20mm.

Recognizing my grizzly count is zero, I tend to believe someone who has actually stopped a few with his handgun. If he carries a .45 loaded with a +solid round, I see no reason to try anything different. And, oh by the way, I understand that he also carries that set up while in Alaska or Africa. But he did not diss carrying the Glock in 10mm.

Do what you do...good luck with the new set up.

Nice looking weapon. I have dropped the AR10 idea and decided to keep my AR 15. So will look at a bolt or lever action rifle including your Remington. Thanks.
