I’ve been thinking about getting a shotgun for home defense and would love to hear your thoughts on what works best. I’m weighing the 12-gauge against the 20-gauge. I get that the 12ga has more stopping power, but I've also heard the 20ga is easier to manage, especially in tight spaces.

What should I be considering for barrel length or stock setup? Are there specific features that really shine for home defense? Also, if you have any favorite models or brands that have been reliable, I’d like to know those.

Lastly, how critical is training? I’ve shot shotguns before, but not with that focus. What kind of practice would you recommend to be ready if the need ever arises?

I wish I still had my issue shotgun. Remington 870 12 gauge with a 14" barrel, Trijicon rifle sights, Parkerized, and built in flashlight. I could put five slugs in a hand sized group out past 50 yards.

As far as 12 v 20, both are good. Recoil likely won't be a factor in such a scenario.

Remington 870 combat 12 GA. Even the sound of ratcheting in a round should make someone reconsider.

Had an 870 youth model, nice light compact grand kids have it now, I've got a Mossberg 500 18 inch pump that I like, but my favorite is a Beretta A300 Ultama patrol, GREAT combat shotgun.... YMMV They all work, if you do your job...
