It was during a late-season muzzleloader hunt, and it was really freezing. We’re talking about 10 degrees, maybe even colder. I’d been perched in my stand for a couple of hours, trying to stay warm and hoping something would come my way. Then, finally, a beautiful buck appears about 100 yards away. I lift my rifle, take aim, and squeeze the trigger... and nothing happens. Complete silence. Total misfire.

What happened? I had gotten so wrapped up in keeping warm that I had accidentally left my muzzleloader propped against the stand, and the cold moisture messed with the powder. I should have known better, but I got lazy. That buck stood there for what felt like an eternity, just staring at me like he was having a good laugh before eventually wandering off.

I walked away that day with two huge lessons in my back pocket: always keep your muzzleloader dry, no matter what, and practice in real cold conditions before the season kicks off. Now, I tuck my rifle inside my coat until I’m ready to use it, and I can honestly say I haven’t had that issue since.
